With Christmas around the corner I have been hunting for gifts and have stumbled upon some really cool products that I want to add to my wish list and also share with readers! This post is all about lips!

1) OCC Lip Tars- According to their product summary, these pucker pigments go on smooth like a gloss and dry like a lipstick! They are only $13/piece and come in 36 shades! I have seen it for sale at Akira in Chicago but you can also pick it up at OCC's website! I can't wait to pick some of these up and to use these on a shoot.... or maybe on me!

2) Lime Crime's Opaque Lipstick Collection- If you're not one to go gaga over a gloss but still want super vibrant or off-the-wall colors then maybe you should opt for Lime Crime's wow-ya shades. For $120 you can get 10 shades or you can buy them individually for $16. Not only do they have lipsticks but you will find glosses, eyeshadows and primers on Lime Crime's site as well.

**3) Kryolan's Lip Rouge Mini Palette in LF- I own this palette and, let me tell you, I LOVE it! It's great for any makeup artist that wants to have a variety of colors in their kit without breaking the bank and it's also wonderful for the personal makeup diva who wants to try a multitude of colors without... well... breaking the bank. Once you figure out what colors you love the most you can buy them in a regular size tube as well. It retails for $32 and comes in 3 different palette tones. Pick it up at CosplaySupplies.com.

**4) NYX Matte Lip Creams- I rave about these to everyone. They're amazing. These creamy, lovely lip tints go on with a wand, like a gloss but stay for hours like a stain and have a satin finish like a lipstick. They come in 11 colors and won't leave you broke because they're only $6! Pick them up at NYX's website!

Tip: Camouflage your roots!

A few quick tips on how to mask your roots if you don't have time to make it to the salon!

1. Dry shampoo. Try a product like Bumble & bumble's dry shampoo. It comes in a variety of colors and can add a subtle hue to your regrowth.

2. Hair mascara. I actually prefer Anastasia's Brow Gels because I think they look more natural but you can find a variety of hair wands at your local Ulta.

3. Zig-zag your part. Confuse your friends eyes and they won't notice how long it has been since your last salon visit!

4. Extra volume. Use hot rollers to give your hair extra height. This way the regrowth will be hidden behind your Texas-style 'do.

Honestly: Ammonia-Free Vs. Ammonia

This isn't a review. It's an honest rant. :)

There is a new "Ammonia-free" trend in hair color. I just wanted to take a moment to point out that Ammonia-free doesn't necessarily mean damage free. Permanent hair color has to be able to penetrate the hair cuticle and in order to do that you need an alkaline substance. The only FDA approved alkaline substances are Ammonia and Alkanolamine. When hair color is "Ammonia-free" that means it has Alkanolamine in it and Alkanolamine is no less damaging than Ammonia. Cutting your hair every time you get it colored will prevent it from becoming damaged. However, if you are worried about Ammonia or Alkanolamine hair color damaging your hair then your options are to have your hairstylist use a temporary or demi hair color that is not permanent. Keep in mind, you will have to color your hair more often and it may not camouflage all of your grey. The up-side is that you won't have a strong line of demarkation at the root which makes it less noticeable when you have regrowth.

DO NOT use Henna. It will simply coat your hair and make it feel sticky and waxy.

On Thursday I was honored to shoot in the freezing color woods with Jessie Stevens (photographer), Eric Stevens (photographer), Katie Jayne (stylist), Brit Robinson (model) and Dena Miller (makeup artist). Everything was beautiful and Brit was such a trooper with all of the environmental abuse she endured. I can't wait to see these shots!!!

Laura Mercier's oil-free tinted moisturizer is to die for! It has a natural spf 20 and goes on with a decent amount of coverage considering it is a tinted moisturizer. I have extremely sensitive skin and have had no issues with this product whatsoever. I use it every day and I don't think I will be changing any time soon! This is definitely an investment for a tinted moisturizer, retailing for $42 at Sephora but it's huge and will last you a long time. It's definitely worth it!

I have written before about how I am super anti Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) and how it is terrible for you. What I haven't mentioned is how I am actually allergic to detergents used in shampoo and how they make my scalp flake like crazy. Growing up I thought I had dandruff so I would use dandruff shampoo but that just made it worse. It has been a constant source of embarrassment. Up until now I have been using Alojoba by Bumble and Bumble. Although my reaction was not as strong to the Alojoba, I still had some flaking.
I recently discovered Deva products. I bought these little guys at Ulta to give them a whirl because their Deva Curl No-Poo (I feel weird saying that name.) is completely detergent free. I used it and I love it and I have NO flaking! Granted, there is zero lather but I don't mind. They also have a low-detergent shampoo called Lo-Poo and a line of every day shampoos for straight haired ladies and gents called Deva Care. I am mainly obsessed with the shampoos but I do really like their gel as well. I have probably never, in the history of doing hair, used a gel on anyone other than when doing finger waves because I hate that crunchy, shellacked look that gel gives. However, when I used Angel it was light and soft and did not look like I had product in my hair. I was really pleasantly surprised. I am hooked and will be sticking with Deva for my own personal use.

When you are a hairstylist/makeup artist you have to haul around a lot of stuff. Currently I am using the FatMax case from Stanley. It is so great for organization but not so great for not be bulky. ~~Yes, I am aware that is a double negative.~~ Also, lugging it up and down stairs is just a chore and not great on my back.

That is why I really want to get my hands on the ZÜCA Pro Case and the Artist Backpack. The Pro Case is so sturdy you can stand on it but it's great for organization and will fit all of my stuff and the backpack is designed to house all of the essentials for any hairstylist! Here's for hoping Santa thinks I have been a good girl considering the backpack retails for $129 and the Pro Case goes for $209-295 depending on what color you want.

A while back I invested in a ton of Kryolan products. I love them so much. Kryolan started as strictly theatrical makeup in Berlin, Germany in 1945. They are well known for their HD foundations as well as their camouflage face makeup, Dermacolor. I love bought palettes of both of those amazing products in an array of tones but I also purchased their mattifying face primer, Perfect Matt. It is great! It goes on clear and instantaneously gives the skin a matte finish! OBSESSED! I have been using this instead of my MAC primer ever since.

You can see that it goes on completely clear.

Okay, you caught me, I have written about these guys before (here and here). It was about this time last year that I discovered these babies but since then my collection has grown. A LOT. I just wanted to revisit my beloved pencils and reiterate how truly great these are! My most used ones are still the golds. I have already replaced them. You can pick them up on the NYX website for a whopping $4.50/piece and they come in 28 shades. I only have 19. Just imagine the possibilities!

Now that winter has rolled back around and it is getting dark at 5 pm, I have decided to devote more time to blogging again! That being said, I am going to start labeling my blog entries differently. They will be categorized as follows:
• Current Obsession - These posts will be about products that I am loving, that I have purchased and were not given to me.
• BTS - "BTS" will stand for "Behind The Scenes" and will be entries with cellphone photos that were taken during shoots, shows and while preparing brides/models for events.
• Honestly - "Honestly" posts will be reviews about donated products. I promise that I will be honest about all products I review. :)
• Wish List - These posts will feature items that are on my list to pick up and why I am excited about them.
• Tear Sheet - These posts will feature work that I have done that has been featured in the media in some way (i.e., magazine, film or blogs)
• Informative - If you have read my post about how to speak to your hairstylist about color or how to find a new stylist in your area then you know what I mean!
• Tutorial - Last but not least, "tutorial" posts will be my how-tos that readers have loved in the past! Believe it or not, my how-to post about Taylor Swift is my most read entry ever!

How To Find A New Hairstylist.

It can be very hard to find a new hairstylist to trust with your locks. Often times people end up just searching Google randomly, get frustrated, quit and go to any random place where they may or may not get a good haircut. Here are a few options:

1) Word of mouth. Ask friends of yours that have great hair or stop people on the street if you admire their hairstyle. I suggest this because your friends won't lie to you. You will get a real, honest suggestion. The downside is if you end up not liking the haircut it could make things awkward for your friend when they go back to their stylist.

2) Sites like Schedulicity or StyleSeat serve as stylist directories that you can search by city. Usually, you can also book directly off of these websites. I use Schedulicity so that clients can book with me 24/7. I really feel like this is the way of the future. You can find other services like massages and Yoga classes as well.

3) If you know of a product line that you really like you can always go to their website and search for a salon nearby. Let's say you really love Davines. Well, you can go to their website and go to their salon locator. Just type in your area and, voila, you have a list of salons that carry your favorite brand.

4) There are also hairstylist databases like SeekingStylists.com. Check out my listing here.

5) If you really want to support your area then keep an eye out at the community boards and community tables in your local coffee shops and restaurants. Stylists will often leave a stack of their cards at the places they frequent.

I was going through my photos on my phone today and found a few bridal trials that I have never posted from the past year and a half. A bridal trial is where a bride-to-be explores the different looks she might want on her wedding day.

Back in May I styled hair for a bridal inspiration shoot with the, respectively, wonderful Jessica Bennett Photography, Iza Mieszczanska (model) and Dena Miller (make up artist). Jessica styled the shoot under the inspiration of "an English garden wedding." We shot in both Lincoln Park, which runs along Lake Michigan just north of downtown Chicago and stunning Humboldt Park, which is littered with European inspired architecture.
I love purposefully, undone textures so I layered sea salt spray and dry shampoo to obtain a gritty texture prior to styling the hair. For the Lincoln Park shoot I created a whimsical, curly updo and topped it off with a hair piece from Chicago's Pish Poshes. Iza's first dress was from H&M. She also wore an amazing second dress by local designer Elizabeth Lara. For the Humboldt Park portion of the shoot I created a custom, tangled braid for Iza in order to show off her dramatic eyeliner and lipstick. Once again we used hair pieces from Pish Poshes and she wore a short, ruffled dress by designer Amanda Archer.

Colored my often-featured friend/make up artist Dena's hair today. She's been a redhead for what seems like forever but we decided to mix it up today and fade her red into orange and then into blonde on the ends! These pictures didn't capture the effect entirely (because it looked SO cool) but you can kind of get the idea!

I must preface by saying, I AM NOT AN ATHLETE but I do care about children in Uganda! That being said, I have officially joined Team World Vision to run the Chicago Marathon (that's 26.2 miles, in case you were wondering) in order to raise sponsorship for children in a specific village in Uganda! I have to get THREE children sponsored (none sponsored so far) and/or raise $1,310 ($75 raised so far)! Please go to my World Vision page to read more about what you can do to help!

Maggie's Mommy Makeover

Maggie is a mom with 3-year old and a 7-month old boys who has little time for herself. She admittedly hadn't had her hair cut or colored in about a year. Her big 3-0 is coming up and she has resolved that it is time in life to pay more attention to her locks.

Our cut-inspiration but above the shoulder and with a bang.

I wanted to give her something beautiful but still manageable for an on-the-go mom so after consulting, we decided to cut her hair above her shoulders so that she could chase her babies around without getting hot but could also look chic at the same time. I gave her a brow-length V-bang so that when her hair is pulled back she can still look put together as well as the added bonus that she can now part her hair on either side. I weaved in blonde highlights to brighten her up but also so that she would have a little more leeway in between needing to get into the salon. I taught her how to blow dry her hair in record time using an Olivia Garden metal core brush and a nickel-size amount of Shaping Lotion from Enjoy Haircare.

Dry shampoos, sometimes called "hair powder", are all the rage right now and for good reason. I am sure that you have heard that it is bad to wash your hair every day. Dry shampoos help you wait longer in between washings and they also give your hair volume and a really fun, matte finish. Check out a few that I like below.

Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It Powder $12.50

I have written about this one before. It comes in a shaker and you put it on like salt or pepper. Throughout the day if your hair begins to fall flat, just rough it up and it will reignite the volume.

Tigi Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo $16.49

This is a pretty great product, especially considering the price point. It's a spray and it works. However, I have experienced the can clogging (notice I only gave it three stars). I have only had it happen to two cans and after I exchanged the second can it didn't happen again, so hopefully they remedied the problem.

Bumble & bumble Hair Powder- various colors $35

The Bb. hair powder is a little more pricey but this is definitely a situation of getting what you pay for. It is great and it comes in a multitude of colors. Not only does it absorb oil, mattify the hair and add volume but it disguises your roots if you are in need of a touch up!

Dena's Assymetrical Make Over!

Long time, no update! Sorry guys! I promise there is a lot of updating coming!
Today I had the pleasure of doing my dear friend (and amazing make up artist) Dena Miller's hair! She came in with black in her bangs and at the apex of her head. After removing the black from her hair, I colored it this amazing red that doesn't show up very well with my cellphone. I then proceeded to give her a super asymmetrical 'do. She had been thinking about it for a while and today was finally the day. To style her hair I coupled Bumble and Bumble's Styling Lotion with Straight and blow dried her hair with a flat boar's bristle brush. How To Approach Thinning/Balding Hair.

      Sometimes clients mention that their hair is beginning to thin and ask for steps they can take to stop the thinning or to grow the hair back. Often they mention that they have tried Rogaine (Minoxidil) but don't know much about other options or why their hair is thinning in the first place.
      "According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 30 million women in the United States are affected by hair loss at some stage - and the numbers are increasing. Depending on which authoritative source you consult, between 25 and 33.3 percent of all American women will suffer varying degrees of hair loss at some point in their lives."
      There are two types of hair loss that women and men experience: permanent (Androgenic Alopecia) and temporary.
     Permanent hair loss is often passed down through your family and shows up in women differently than it does in men. Men will often lose their hair in specific places, usually the front of the hairline or the crown of the head. Women experience thinning throughout their hair, many times never seeing complete baldness.
      Temporary hair loss is mostly seen in women and can only be diagnosed by a doctor. Thyroid disease, Anorexia/Bulimia and protein deficiencies are common causes of temporary hair loss.
      Treatments for permanent hair loss vary between men and women. Men who want to stop balding in its tracks should talk to their doctor about Propecia (Finasteride) and women should look into Spironolactone, Cyproterone Acetate or Flutamide. These prescription medications help to keep the hair you already have and prevent it from falling out.
     Another option for both men and women is Minoxidil or Rogaine. Rogaine requires consistent use, sometimes not seeing results for up to 60 days.
      "In clinical tests, Minoxidil produced new hair growth in varying amounts in 6 out of 10 women."
       Hair transplant surgery is a permanent remedy to thinning hair. Speak to your doctor about whether this is right for you.
       And finally, wigs and hair pieces. Lace front wigs can be worn for multiple days and if applied correctly are virtually undetectable. As I have mentioned in previous posts, many of todays top celebrities wear wigs on a regular basis.

Loosen Up Your Curls With Surf Spray.

Today I curled my hair with a 3/4" ceramic iron. The curls are a little too Shirley Temple for my liking when I use this iron on my hair so then I spritz Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray in to loosen the curls up. Surf Spray is a sea salt styling spray. I love it! This was my result:

LA Splash Mascara in Purple Splash:
I have been on the prowl for a vibrant purple mascara for some time and have been let down by a few. However, Purple Splash did not disappoint when it came to vibrancy. It held its pigment even over my black lashes. It even made them look quite a bit longer. My only complaint has to do with its claim of being waterproof. It wasn't even eye-watering-due-to-cold proof. I would be scared to see what one would look like following a good cry. Yikes! Also, I wish that it was more volumizing.
Overall, I really love this mascara and will be using it quite often, I am sure. This would be a great mascara for any brown-eyed lady who wants length and a punch of color! It wouldn't be particularly great for someone with watery eyes/allergies or anyone with sparse lashes. It comes in a variety of colors and you can get it here.

Purple Splash, French Fries and Pure Gold.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils in French Fries and Pure Gold:
I love these two colors together! They have a slight shimmer and leave the eyelid looking dewy. I used them for the look I had above. I wouldn't suggest French Fries on its own unless you are looking for drama. It is a dark bronze and could probably end up looking too dark if you are not careful. Above I applied it to my crease first and blended it out, then applied a little more, followed by Pure Gold and blended them out once more. The Pure Gold looks great by itself. Use some sort of eyelid primer prior to application. Above, I used the Painterly Paint Pot by M.A.C. I would suggest NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils to anyone but I would urge those with cooler skin tones not to wear these particular colors. You can buy them here.

     Color can be a confusing thing to describe. Some people have a different understanding of what words like "brassy", "honey" or "caramel" translate to in regard to hair pigments. What is "auburn" to one person may be "mahogany" to another. So in order to get great results from your hair color service, you must first understand the way a hairstylist approaches color.
     There are two major factors to hair color; level and tone.
     Level is the lightness/darkness of the hair. It ranges from level 1 to level 12. Often, clients confuse level for tone during consultation. Here is a visual to understand levels of hair color:

Tone is the underlying pigment in the haircolor. This is represented on a color wheel as opposed to a spectrum. Think of level and tone as variables in an algebraic equation: Level + Tone= Haircolor. One person could be a level 4 Gold (Dark Golden Brown) while another could be a level 4 Red (Dark Red). They are both the same level of darkness but the hair will look very different on each individual. The same goes for levels; a level 6 Ash (Light Ash Brown) will look very different from a level 10 Ash (Light Ash Blonde).

In order to have a successful color service first decide the level of lightness/darkness you want to see and then decide tone. Understand that when you say you want blonde hair that could mean a variety of things to a stylist. They could see you as a beige blonde when in reality you'd prefer to be a golden blonde. If you have trouble describing what you want, bring in a picture. Show the stylist exactly what you want. Yesterday I mentioned that I had purchased Almay's Intense I-Color Mascara in Purple Amethyst. Today I have to report that I wasn't too thrilled. The color didn't show up on my dark lashes and it gave me gunky, spider lashes. I removed the mascara with a make up wipe and reapplied with my usual mascara. So I guess it is back to the drawing board. Can anyone suggest a vibrant purple mascara that they have used over dark lashes?

Clients often bring in photos of hairstyles they want worn by a celebrity in a wig. The clients are usually shocked to find out it is a wig. Wigs are very common in Hollywood these days, particularly those of the "lace front" variety. Here is a visual of a lace front wig before it has been glued on:

The lace is glued on to the skin and often goes undetected. However, sometimes crinkling of the skin or make up getting stuck in the glue can give a wig-wearer away. To spot a wig look for a mesh halo around the face. Also, if a hairstyle looks TOO perfect it might just be a wig. Here are some examples of celebrities in wigs:

I was messing around with my Hipstamatic Camera application on my iPhone and decided to post some pictures of recent beauty buys that I have made!

Alojoba shampoo and conditioner, Bumble and Bumble. I've posted about Alojoba before because I love it. It's organic with a low pH and combines aloe, jojoba oil, chamomile, cucumber and vitamins E and B5. It's gentle on color and your scalp. It has low amounts of surfactant (what makes it lather) in it in order to be gentle. Don't use too much. It still works even without tons of lather. Limp haired ladies, this may not be for you. Anyone with coarse, frizzy or normal hair, give it a go!! Get it here.

Almay Intense I-Color Mascara in Purple Amethyst. I haven't used this yet but I am excited because it is purple! Purple mascara makes brown eyes pop so I plan on coating my lower lashes with this for a little added pizazz! Supposedly, it is hypoallergenic which is awesome because I have very sensitive skin around my eyes! It comes in three other colors, intended to make your eye color even more intense. Check all four out here.

When I was little my family would have me make a wishlist for "Santa". I would pretty much just copy everything from the Toys 'R' Us catalog onto a piece of paper. Now that I am an adult and I have finally realized that Christmas isn't about the gifts I'm a little pickier. I have narrowed my list down to five items that I would love to write a review of for ShelbyDoesHair.com! :)

My beauty wishlist:

1) The Sedu Revolution Pro Tourmaline Ionic 4000i Hair Dryer. Why? It is small and, from what I have heard, really powerful with a long cord and a two-year warranty. It will set you back a pretty penny, $159.99 to be exact. Get it here.

2) A Mason Pearson X-Large Mixed Bristle Hair Brush. Why? This is the brush of the pros. I have wanted one forever! Order it here for $150.98. This one is the largest, they also come in smaller sizes.

3) Bright Crystal Eau De Toillette by Versace. Why? This is my favorite fragrance and I just ran out. It is pretty but still bright and citrus-heavy. I love it. Macy's has a 3.4 oz bottle of it for $88. Okay, you caught me. I don't really want to write a review on this one! I just need a refill! :)

4) Stay Don't Stray by Benefit Cosmetics. Why? Word is that this primer works for concealer and eyeshadow, preventing creasing and keeping your make-up in place. It is only $24 on Benefit's website. I haven't used it but I love everything I have ever tried by Benefit (I worked for them when I was in cosmetology school) so I am dying to try this primer!

5) The Herstyler Grande Baby Curl Clipless Curling Iron. Why? It is tourmaline ceramic, affordable AND it comes in a variety of cute colors! I would love to try it and see if it really is all it claims to be! :) Get it at Folica.com for $89.95.

I haven't mentioned this because I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade but it has been a while so here goes: I hated Taylor Swift's wig at the AMAs. The wig made her look so every-day and boring. As I have previously posted, I think her traditional look is so great so why change it to something less... great? For a brief second I thought that she actually colored her hair to that apricot color and cut a fringe but then I gathered my wits and took a harder look. There is no way that was her hair. It was WAY too thick. My suspicions were confirmed when she appeared on the Chelsea Handler show following the AMAs and her hair was back to usual.

Milkmaid Braids.

What Stylists/Make-Up Artists Wish They Could Say

I recently posed this question to my hairstylist/make up artist friends, "What have you wished you could say to a client at your most frustrated point?" Their identities have been left anonymous and there were many things that I could not post here. However, some of them weren't TOO bad, so here they are:

"When my clients mother came along to her haircut appointment I wanted to say, 'Here how about you go ahead and finish for me? Obviously, you know more than a state licensed professional!'"
"Stop Trying to be a bleach blonde bombshell with level 4 hair!"
"'Yeah, you have pretty hair but you look bad with it long,' or 'your hair is way too thin to be this long.'"
"Coloring your hair at home has left your hair looking like it's three different colors."
"My biggest pet peeve is when people complain about their hair not looking like when I first cut/style it, when they aren't willing to use the products I use or to take the time to style their hair. If you want it to look the way I do it then do it like I do it. Or just be honest that you aren't willing to style it at home."
"I'm the professional, not you."
"I don't think it is fair that you can use a box color on your hair and damage it when you know it is bad for your hair and then come in here and expect me, in one appointment, to completely undo the damage. Trust me when I tell you not to use box color."
"You need bangs."
"Keep your head still, please."
"I'm not the hairstylist for you."
"I don't apply glitter shadows/liners on people over the age of 15 unless it's for an event because you will look [bad]."
"I know that you are lying about coloring your hair yourself. I'm not judging you so please be honest with me."

I guess the moral of the story is: be nice and be honest with yourself and your stylist in order to create a great relationship that will give you the best results possible.

I am sure clients have had plenty of things they wish they could say but haven't. Feel free to leave comments with some of your thoughts.

Taylor Swift has some of the most iconic hair in American media today. It is almost impossible to find a picture of this girl having a bad hair day, it is that flawless. Don't get discouraged though because Miss Swift wasn't born with such perfect hair. She maintains a hair regime just like us mere mortals. Taylor's curls are achieved by wrapping the hair around a curling iron as opposed to winding a curling iron around the hair. Confused? Don't be. Lets break it down.

Taylor's natural texture.

The closest thing I could find for a "bad hair day" in recent history.

Naturally, Taylor has a very fine, frizzy texture. Adding ringlets with a curling iron helps to enhance her volume and smooth out her frizz. At times, Taylor also has extensions to add length and volume. I don't know the exact products that Taylor uses but I would suggest starting with Bumble and Bumble's Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner. Once the hair is clean and towel-dried, spritz some Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray from root to end. Then rough dry the hair to add volume.

Once the hair is completely dry, section hair using duck-bill clips that you can find at any beauty supply story. I love the TS-2 Rubber Mini Mouth clips for all hair densities.

Does It All by Bumble and Bumble.

Now that the hair is sectioned, spray with your favorite styling spray (for curl-resistant hair use a finishing spray). I love Does It All (styling spray) and Classic (finishing spray) by Bumble and Bumble. Now, begin curl the hair by wrapping 1"x1" sections around a 1/2"-3/4" curling wand or curling iron (without using the clip). Repeat throughout the entire head. Break up curls as needed and set with Classic hairspray. You should end up with something resembling this the pictures below (If you're still confused watch the video at the bottom of the post). Once you get the hang of this it will take you no time at all to look as adorable as Taylor everyday!

I was at work, helping a guest pick out a blush. I asked her what she wanted from her blush, a common question, but today was the day that changed my life forever. Bangs are a great way to bring new life to your look. Don't be afraid to go short, sometimes really short. When clients are trying to grow their hair out I encourage them to try creative things with their bangs in order to get them through the, sometimes awkward, stages of the process.

Favorite Blow Dry Products/Brush!

Since the holidays are approaching I thought I would offer some beauty-gift suggestions! These are my favorite blowdry products from Bumble and Bumble, along with my favorite brush as of late. I tried to think of products that could work for just about anyone. If you have any questions please feel free to post them in the comments!

Tonic Lotion: This is a great product to use for prepping the hair before a blowdry. It is a mixture of herbs and tea tree oil that makes your scalp feel great, helps to smooth the hair and helps to enhance the performance of the other Bumble and Bumble products. I like to spray it directly on the scalp and then lightly mist it through to the ends. It is highly suggested for coarse, thick hair.

Styling Lotion: This is my FAVORITE product for blowdrying and it is great for ALL hair types. It helps keep the shape of your blowdry and makes the hair sleek and shiny. I mist it throughout the mid-shaft to the ends of the hair, making sure to evenly apply the product. Spraying Tonic Lotion prior to using this helps to ensure that it goes on more evenly.

Thickening Hairspray: VOLUME! This product is very versatile. It can do wonders for any type of hair type if used accordingly. I like to spray it directly onto the roots in the crown area of the head to give added lift during blowdry. If you want a little more body throughout the hair layer it over Tonic Lotion and Styling Lotion. It can also be used as a regular hairspray on dry hair. It works wonders!

"Flatter Me Too" from Marilyn Brush: It has an hourglass shape to create tension so you don't have to continuously twirl the brush. The extra long handle helps keep the blowdry process from becoming cumbersome. The boars bristles smooth the hair while the nylon bristles detangle. They come in a variety of sizes. Using a Round Brush.

I've had many conversations with clients about using round brushes. This isn't a tutorial on using round brushes, just an encouragement. Practice makes perfect, trust me. Don't give up. Your best friend is going to be sectioning. Don't just dive into your entire head of hair with a round brush. It WILL get tangled.

The Quadrus line by Cricket is one of my favorites. It comes in three sizes and features a square handle which makes it much easier to hang on to and to turn. It features a square barrel which can be used to create a traditional round brush look or to smooth the hair out straight. Go to the Cricket website to find a store near you that carries them: Cricket.

Here is a great tutorial on blow drying long hair yourself. They feature a boars bristle brush but you can also use a metal core brush depending out your hair texture:

When a consumer buys a professional brand's hair products from a retailer like Walgreens, CVS or Target it is called Diversion. Consumers often think they are getting a deal but many times end up paying more than they would at a salon for products that could be old, used, damaged or even counterfeit. In some studies diverted products have been found to have extreme amounts of bacteria in them from being stored improperly for long periods of time. Check out these two videos that explain and give real evidence for why buying diverted products is a bad idea.
**Personal thought: If you are going to spend more at a third party retailer than at a salon for a product that might be bad then why not support your hairstylist/favorite salon?**

L'oreal debuted their amazing new Ammonia-free color line, INOA. To celebrate and to incite even MORE excitement over the new line INOA teamed up with Ted Gibson and Vogue Magazine. They held a contest awarding the winners the opportunity to assist Ted Gibson in a Vogue photoshoot. I entered and these are some of the photos from that. The model, Emily, had never colored her hair and it was amazingly healthy. I chose to keep her base close to her natural and create dimension using a technique called Balayage. This allows her dimensional color to grow out for much longer than traditional highlights without driving her nuts.

The Difference Between Drugstore and Salon Brand Shampoos and Conditioners

As a hairstylist one of the most common questions I am asked is, "are salon quality and drugstore shampoos/conditioners really that different?" The answer: yes. In fact, not only are salon brands better, drugstore brands can really be hurting more than just your hair. So please, don't automatically feel as if you are "being sold" when your hairstylist recommends a shampoo and conditioner. It is their job to make your hair look great and that continues after you leave the salon as well. Note: While reading this please keep in mind that though ingredients names might sound similar, they can be quite different.

Shampoo--
It is commonly thought that a shampoo has to have a lot of lather to actually be working but lather is sometimes an indicator of harmful ingredients that are present in your shampoo. Shampoos can still effectively clean your hair without producing a lot of lather.
Shampoos contain agents/surfactants that cause lather and the most commonly found is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) followed closely by Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES). These are very common because they are very inexpensive to use. SLS will ruin colored hair, is pretty irritating, often used in industrial cleansers and there is a lot of evidence that suggests it is CARCINOGENIC (cancer causing). ALS and ALES are slightly less irritating than SLS but they still can often be found in clothing detergents and other household chemicals.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) is much less irritating/harsh than SLS and is usually found in higher end, salon quality products. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is even less irritating because it has larger molecules that are not as easily absorbed into the skin.
Also, check ingredients on everything you buy, even salon brands.

My philosophy: If you are going to spend the money to have your hair colored, spend the money to keep the color molecules in tact by buying shampoos that have been formulated specifically for salon-colored hair.

Brands containing SLS, ALS, ALES:
Pantene, Herbal Essence, Dove, Pert, Head and Shoulders, VO5, Suave, White Rain, etc

Brands containing SLES:
Bumble and Bumble, Davines, Aveda

Conditioner--
Conditioners are traditionally used post-shampooing to restore oils to the hair that have been lost during cleaning. Typically, silicones are used to mimic the Sebum (natural hair oil) that has been lost but there are different types of silicones that can be used to do this and they have different effects. Dimethicone, which is found in very high concentrations in Pantene, forms a film on the cuticle of your hair which makes the hair feel great. However, too much Dimethicone creates a barrier that your natural oils (Sebum) cannot penetrate and your hair becomes dry and ends begin splitting. Don't get me wrong, Dimethicone isn't always bad. Some great conditioners contain very small amounts of Dimethicone, intended to smooth out rough cuticles and when used in styling products it can help reduce frizz and protect hair from humidity. Cheaper deep conditioners contain a ton of Dimethicone which coats the hair, making it feel fantastic but in the end, it really isn't doing anything for the interior of the hair shaft. If you have curly hair, avoid Humectants. They grab moisture from the air which will then lead to added frizz. If you have colored hair avoid Cetrimonium Chloride. It is antiseptic which is great for people with scalp conditions but bad for colored hair. Conditioners are all so different and that is why it is very important you talk to a professional stylist about what type of conditioner is right for your hair type.

Buying professional brand shampoos/conditioners at the drugstore--
This is called Diversion. Professional brands that can be found at drugstores are there illegally. When a professional line sells their products to a salon there is a contract involved that states that the salon will not sell their products to a third party distributor. However, sometimes when salons change product lines or close they still sell off their lot of hair goods to the third party distributors who then do who knows what with the products before they show up at Target, Walgreens and CVS. Be weary. Often times they are just as expensive, if not more, when you buy from a retail store and they are not guaranteed by the company. Products can be tampered with, diluted or counterfeit and you will never know the difference until you get home and you break out in a rash or it doesn't deliver the expected results. Also, even if it is cheaper, the difference is miniscule. Especially, if you have a relationship with your stylist, respect and trust them enough to buy from them.

I am so, SO, SOOO sad to tell you that I am officially done doing hair in Orlando. I have loved it and I appreciate your business!! A couple of things that I wanted to communicate were that 1) I am referring all of my clients to Katee Kroeplin at Salon Elysee. Katee is amazing. I went to Paul Mitchell with her and have worked with her at both Blush and Salon Elysee. She is a sweetheart! Her number is 321-460-8686. Her prices are the same as mine and she will provide you with excellent customer service. 2) I can still come back to do hair for weddings if all of the bridesmaids and the bride are getting their hair done. Clip-in extensions

A lot of people want extensions but feel that they are not affordable. There is a cheaper option available. I make custom clip-in extensions for my clients. Clients buy real human hair from a local hair store and bring it in with them for their extensions consultation. We then discuss the goal they are aiming for by getting the extensions and measure their head so that the extensions are completely customized just for them. We schedule an appointment for a week later to blend the extensions into the hair and so that I can teach the client how to put the extensions in and take them out by themselves.
These extensions last for years and can be worn everyday or just for special occasions. 100% real human hair extensions can be washed, curled, flat ironed and even colored.
I have a lot of requests for these from brides because they can have them in for their wedding day and take them out for their honeymoon.

The client buys the hair and then it only costs $120 for me to assemble them and blend them into the client's existing haircut. It ends up being less than a $200 process and it doesn't take 6 hours of the client sitting in the chair!!
